2024 Spotlight on Rural and Remote Education

The Association of BC Deans of Education hosted a provincial one-day symposium, Spotlight on Rural and Remote Education: Cultivating a Shared Responsibility, on Thursday November 21, 2024.

The symposium brought together educational and community partners of rural and remote education from across British Columbia to explore the critical facets of rural and remote education with the goal of cultivating shared responsibilities to address the unique circumstances of rural and remote education.

The purpose of the symposium was to:

  • Build and strengthen relationships between Teacher Education Programs (TEPs) and educational partners of rural and remote education (school districts, government, educators, administrators, trustees, and others invested in rural and remote education)
  • Engage in active listening and dialogue to identify priorities and address complexities within the rural and remote education experience, allowing us to learn and share with one another
  • Determine a view of the future and the roles and responsibilities for TEPs, communities, schools, local and provincial governments, and teacher education programs
  • Showcase and assess exemplars, innovative strategies, and celebrations of success

The symposium featured presentations and opportunities for dialogue on significant topics from a broad range of perspectives. The event included remarks from the ABCDE and the Ministry of Education and Child Care. A reception was hosted prior to a closing keynote by Dr. Diane Gereluk from Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary. What follows is a summary of the activities and discussions from the symposium.
